YF-VAX® [Yellow Fever Vaccine] is a live attenuated freeze-dried vaccine prepared by culturing the 17D-204 strain of yellow fever virus in living avian leukosis virus-free (ALV) chicken embryos. The vaccine, which contains sorbitol and gelatin as stabilizers, is lyophilized and hermetically sealed under nitrogen.
This strategy aims to end yellow fever outbreaks by 2026 through improved laboratory and epidemiologic surveillance, as well as improved vaccination coverage for people living in at risk areas. CDC staff provide technical assistance, conduct training and research, and seek funding for yellow fever vaccination campaigns in endemic countries, as Yellow fever virus (YFV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, is present in tropical areas of Africa and South America. In humans, the majority of YFV infections are asymptomatic. Clinical disease varies from a mild, undifferentiated febrile illness to severe disease with jaundice and hemorrhagic manifestations ( 1 ).
Brazil recently experienced its largest-recorded yellow fever (YF) outbreak in decades; >2,000 human cases and ≈750 deaths occurred during July 2016–June 2018 ().The virus reached the metropolitan areas, where the YF vaccine had not been previously recommended.
In the 1930s, French and American scientists independently developed vaccines against yellow fever. The vaccines are not entirely without risk and are only administered to individuals living or yellow-fever. 2. Screen all patients for contraindications and precautions to the yellow fever vaccine Contraindications: • A history of a serious allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) after a previous dose of YF vaccine or to a vaccine component (to include egg, chicken, or gelatin)
The yellow fever vaccine is safe, affordable and a single dose provides life-long protection against yellow fever disease. A booster dose of yellow fever vaccine might be needed in areas where the disease is continuously prevalent and if it has been over 10 years since it was last taken. Avoid traveling to yellow fever endemic countries.
A vaccine is available for yellow fever. The disease no longer happens in the U.S. But talk with your healthcare provider to see if you need the shot before visiting areas where yellow fever still exists. People who have had yellow fever develop lifelong immunity. As of June 2016, the World Health Organization recommends a one-time yellow fever

Potential vaccination side effects in adults. In the majority of cases, side effects from vaccinations are mild and short-lived. Myalgia (muscle pain), headache, low-grade fever, tiredness and soreness at the injection site are not uncommon during the first five to ten days following the injection, and a small red swelling may also appear
